We got word back that the mortgage was approved from the lending institution without CMHC involved. Still the lack of communication when we asked to talk to the CMHC rep asking for an engineer, and the fact that a call to CMHC's head office revealed that they would not have asked for that sort of requirement has lead us to be wary of our broker and we are scrambling to get a few other options lined up with other institutions.

Updates will be posted later this week!

Have you tried this approach?: Gather together a list of all the jurisdictions which sanction straw bale construction. I know for a fact the State of California adopted codes for how to build with straw bale. This type of thing may impress them and show how they are outdated.

Good luck,
