Cars pollute by burning oil and spewing forth carbon dioxide. If we want a tax against this evil, the appropriate places to impose taxes are on the sale (or better still, manufacture) of gas-guzzling cars AND on the fuel. The latter makes the most sense, because that way those who pollute the most pay the most. The Daily Mail back in March unwittingly showed how a Merc 4x4 can be greener than a Toyota Prius.
