Link day

I found my city’s farmers’ market today, and discovered that there’s a couple growing huge beautiful watermelons not six blocks from my house. I also talked to a teenager in our town who sells the vegetables he grows, and I bought some nice summer squash from him. I talked to another couple who grow blueberries. Now I know blueberries grow in Oklahoma. There’s also a couple in the next town over who came. They grow their own beef, as well as eggs and blackberries!

It’s good to know your neighbors and who’s growing stuff. You never know when the information might come in handy.

I love relaxing and reading new things on Saturdays, so I thought I would use this day to share the links I’ve been collecting this week:

Organic gardening could feed the world

A switch to organic farming would not reduce the world’s food supply and could also increase food security in developing countries, say the authors of a new study.

They claim their findings lay to rest the debate over whether organic farming could sustainably feed the world. Organic farming avoids or heavily restricts the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, as well as livestock feed additives.

Thinking ahead to the fall garden

…fall gardening is much nicer than summer gardening. The disease and bug problems often seem to just go away. The weather is crisp and pleasant. If you have to put something up, the fire on the woodstove or the heat of the dehydrator is welcome, rather than annoying. And, if you were busy or away back when it was time to get your tomatoes planted, you can still go ahead and plant an autumn garden.

New site of the week: Saving Electricity

This is a really good site that I’ve only started going through. This man shows you how to read your meter, how to figure out which of your appliances use the most energy, how your electric bill is calculated…all sorts of things a person should know. (I didn’t!)

Have a restful weekend.
