Eat Local Challenge

A little while ago I mentioned the Eat Local Challenge. For me it’s not as much of a challenge anymore.

At the beginning of the summer I began reading about eating locally, and I started to read my labels to see where things were coming from. It’s surprising how much of what I used to buy is trucked in.

So I found local meat (grass-fed beef, buffalo, lamb, chicken and pork — gotta love Oklahoma), a farmers’ market that’s open year-round for fresh veggies and fruit, even local juice, butter, flour, and sort-of-local rice (I get my rice from Louisiana now instead of California).

And it’s good! Last night we had a fat five pound certified organic free range chicken for dinner. You can’t get chicken like this from Wal-Mart. :D Tonight I’m making chicken and rice soup with purslane from a big terracotta pot by the side of my garage and basil from the backyard. It smells wonderful.

Eating local takes a bit of awareness of what you’re buying, but it’s not difficult at all. I haven’t found a down side to this yet!

  1. Browsing the Eat Local Challenge, I found your blog. I thought that you might be interested in our website Loulies which has two features: (1) “e-bites” which are sent out , on average, twice a week via email. The are short musings on anything and everything inspired by food and always include a great recipe, must-have tip, menu idea, new ingredient discovered etc. You must sign-up to receive the e-bites. (2) A Cook the Book club for those who want to learn to cook better with us (like a traditional book club, but we cook instead of read – this is how Suzanne and I met over 10 years ago and have learned to cook better with friends – it is really a great concept).

Please go to our website and sign-up to gain a better sense of who we are and how our site works. Everything we have written so far is archived on our home page.
