So …

Patrik wants pictures, Patrik gets pictures (click on them to enlarge):
Here’s the north side of the garden. It’s gotten down into the teens at times, but a few layers of row cover (available at hardware stores and online) has done fine in keeping things unfrozen. I have greens, turnips, onions, garlic, and beets still in […]

Now this is interesting

World Clock
Pseudo-realtime global population statistics that you can narrow down to this year/month (same thing for a day yet), week, day, or starting right now. Has causes of death, population growth, incarceration and illegal immigration statistics. Kind of sobering.

More food adventures

Today I tried to make yogurt for the first time, using the second method on this page (very easy, btw!). It didn’t exactly turn out as I expected. But I did learn some things:

Don’t try to use old milk that has already started to make curds and expect to get yogurt
Let the milk […]

I had this political rant …

… but I think I’m going to wait until after the elections are over.
What do you think the Republicans are lacking? What does the Republican party need to do in order to win the White House?

What about our children?

I don’t normally pass things like this along, but you have got to see this video.
The band, Five for Fighting, is generously donating $0.49 to Autism Speaks each time this video is viewed. The funding goes toward research studies to help find a cure. When you have a moment, please visit the link below to […]

Forget the mall

There’s a better way to dress well!
I’ve just joined a great group called Wardrobe Refashion. Here’s a copy of the rules, and here’s the ‘pledge’. Basically, you don’t buy new clothes, you make them! Not only do you make them, but you remake all that stuff sitting in your closet that a) is out of […]

More local eating

Lovely salad from the backyard, ham steaks (local, saved in the freezer from Christmas dinner) baked with locally grown sweet potatoes I bought from the co-op a couple of months ago. My daughter’s boyfriend came over for dinner, which was pronounced yummy by all.

100 foot meal

Another great salad tonight, from right outside my back door. The mesclun mix I planted a month or so ago is coming up like crazy and tastes really good! That with the supersweet baby carrots has even my kids eating salad. I wish I had thought to take a picture. Maybe next time.
Along […]

Want to swap?

I’ve set up the seeds I have for swapping over on the Seed Swap 2008! page (on your right). If you see something you like and have something you’d like to swap for it, drop me a line.

Now this is my kind of challenge

We’ve heard about the 100 mile diet, and I talked about looking into eating within a 25 mile radius of your home. So how about the 100 foot challenge?
100 feet? Yep. Grow your own.
For this, you see how much of your food you can grow within 100 feet of your house.
For those of you who […]
