So …

Patrik wants pictures, Patrik gets pictures (click on them to enlarge):

Here’s the north side of the garden. It’s gotten down into the teens at times, but a few layers of row cover (available at hardware stores and online) has done fine in keeping things unfrozen. I have greens, turnips, onions, garlic, and beets still in the ground, making nice additions to the salad. Not everything in the left plot is covered, as there’s some things there that need to go dormant, like the asparagus.

I attach the row covers with these things that look like huge staples (I forget now what they’re called) that stick into the ground. It helps the covers not blow off if you pull them tight so the wind isn’t as likely to pull them up.

This is the side plot, facing south, by the porch. This area is much warmer because of the sun on the brick wall. It’s a bit sheltered too, bricks seem to do fine holding them down. Which is good, because those staple things are very easy to lose in dormant bermuda grass …

Let’s lift up the covers and see what’s underneath …

hidden lettuce!

This lettuce and greens are growing like crazy — I get a salad from here at least twice a week, cut and come again style.

So it’s not hard or complicated to get things to grow over the winter. If/when it gets under 10F or so, I have clear plastic that I’m going to put over everything. I’ll post more pictures of that. It’s been pretty warm this year so I don’t know if I’ll need that!

  1. Thank you, I wish I could even see my grass, but alas, I have not for the last two months. I have been thinking about something makeshift like this to go out on our south facing concrete slab covered porch though; It could work. Thanks again.

And by the way very impressed with the attention to detail, you spelled my name correctly. :)

  2. LOL

Well, it’s an unusual spelling so it stuck in my head, I guess.
