A beautiful sunny day
It’s been a nice day so far:
Planted two kinds of sunflowers with my son. Found out that a mole got my cherry tomato plant.
Harvested snow peas and pea leaves, lettuces, garlic, onion, chickweed, and chard
Preserved — froze pea pods and peas, saved more snow pea seeds for fall planting.
Composted — the dish wash water went into the bin, as well as the kitchen scraps bunnies won’t eat (mostly eggshells and bones).
Local Food Networking — going later to bring a friend two extra tomato plants
Today I made what we call ‘egg rice’ for breakfast: brown rice from Louisiana (leftover from dinner last night) fried with local eggs, salt and pepper. My kids love this, and it’s an easy way to use up leftover rice, as it works best when the rice is cold.
Lunch was a peanut butter sandwich (the bread is from Colorado) with some iced green tea. I had some homemade tortilla (made with local wheat and shortening) for a snack after working outside.
Dinner will be buffalo burgers (Buns from Colorado, local buffalo and tomato, the lettuce and onion from our garden. Salad for whoever wants it made completely from our garden, with salad dressing from New Mexico. Non-local ketchup/mustard/pickles.
Local: 5 (lots more than that if you count the salad) Regional: 4 Non-local: 4 (5 if you count the non-local cheese the kids like — I don’t eat cheese on hamburgers, they do.) Dry items/spices: 3
