Getting competent
Sharon Astyk has something going called the Competence Project, and it looks interesting. The idea is to pick something you want to learn to do and get good at it.
Since I don’t seem to be able to post on her site (this has been going on for a while and has yet to be figured out) I’m going to post mine here.
I have two things I’d like to do:
1) Fix the control assembly on the shower. It gunks up because we have such hard water, and last time we paid a guy beaucoup bucks to clean it out. This involves turning off water in the house, which I’m not sure how to do yet.
2) Learn to service my own sewing machines. I have a Brother electric and a Singer treadle machine, both in need of servicing.
Yeah. So now I guess I have to figure out how to turn off the water in the house. This should be fun.

Are you sure the treadle needs servicing? Those old machines are made to run forever with only a good cleaning several times a year. There are several groups on YahooGroups that could give you more info. The greatest thing (IMHO) about those machines (I have 3 of them) is that *anyone* can “service” them with minimal skill (I have none
and just a screwdriver and oil can.

This is a machine I got on Craigslist. The owner said it was her grandmother’s, who died five years ago, and has been sitting in a garage ever since. I think it might need something done.
I’m glad to hear that this isn’t something difficult. I’ll try looking this up online.
