Throwing it all away (a minor rant)

(If you don’t care for rants you can skip this one )
I’m seeing an interesting trend on some of these groups I belong to: people who start on something (like canning or gardening) then at the first sign of anything that might not be picture-perfect, ask if they should “throw it away”. One lady […]

Good news

It rained really hard overnight! I was thrilled to see the barrels full as well as the buckets I use for the overflow. I really need more barrels.
Harvested some lovely greens, which I’m not sure what kind they are or how they got there. I think they’re really large versions of something in my mesclun […]

Oh my, it’s hot

I wish I were talking about a picture of a guy or something.
A lot of my plants outside are wilting, and my stevia out front died. 100F and humid! Yecch.
I brought Leon outside this morning, and it wasn’t too bad. I went out just now and the heat was awful.
So other than composting some bunny […]

Sick day

Let’s see …
Today I picked a few green beans and froze them. That’s it.
Although I did water and compost some bunny litter yesterday, when I was coming down with whatever this is. I might water some later on when it cools off a bit.
We’re going to visit family this weekend, so I’ve been trying to […]

Enter the party zone

This is party week in this house: two birthdays and an anniversary!
Anyways,  a few things have gotten done in the last few days …
Planted: more beans, more tomatoes, the other half of my seed potatoes
Harvested: green beans, my lone tomato, a small salad of beet and rapa greens, carrots
Managed: did some bunny bin cleaning, also […]

Eh.

Today is one of those lack-of-energy days. But I did do a few things:
Planted: black oil sunflowers (filling in the gaps where my giant sunflowers didn’t sprout). Potted up my mint, repotted a few tomatoes and a gingerroot.
Managed: composted some bunny litter and kitchen scraps. Did some pond maintenance.
Hope you are having a better day […]

Sticky hot

Well, we’ve had fun this weekend so far. We watched a good part of the Twilight Zone marathon on the Sci-fi channel, and had a barbecue on the Fourth (with local meats, regional hamburger buns, and I made the hot dog buns from local flour).
And now Sunday has appeared as if by magic!
Harvested: a bit […]

Well, I *did* do something today …

… other than pontificate about weeds.
Planted: Lakota blue squash, the strawberry plants, and all the rest of the sweet potato slips!
Sweet potatoes are wonderful things. If they grow in your area, grow them. They are so easy to propagate; just cut off a piece of the vine and stick it in water, where it will […]

Opportunities

“Oh,” a friend moaned when I mentioned I had a garden, “I could never have a garden … I just can’t deal with all the weeds!”
One of my favorite articles on managing a homestead is this one: Nature’s Pace
There are no wastes on a sustainable farm, only opportunities.
So … what do you have an abundance […]

Lovely dinner

Tonight we had fajitas, with local buffalo meat, two kinds of sweet peppers my next door neighbor gave us, and onions from the front yard (Remember that garden plot I made earlier? Grown right there.) with regional tortillas.
My family loves fajitas, so much so that one of my sons to this day will put homemade […]
